What is berberine?.

Berberine is a chemical found in certain plants, such as European barberry, goldenseal, golden thread, Oregon grape, phellodendron, and turmeric.

Berberine is a bitter, yellowish tasting chemical. It may help increase heart rate, which may benefit people with certain heart conditions. It can also kill bacteria, help regulate how the body uses blood sugar, and help reduce swelling.

People commonly use berberine for diabetes, high cholesterol or other fats in the blood, and high blood pressure. It is also used for burns, cancers, liver disease, and many other conditions, but there is no strong scientific evidence to support many of these uses.

It can be effective for:

To be cancerous.

Diabetes mellitus.

High levels of cholesterol or other fats (lipids) in the blood (hyperlipidaemia).

High blood pressure.

Hormonal condition that causes enlargement of the ovaries with cysts (polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS).

If taken by mouth: Berberine may be safe for most adults. It has been used safely in doses of up to 1.5 grams per day for 6 months. Common side effects include diarrhea, constipation, gas, and upset stomach.

When applied to the skin: Berberine may be safe for most adults when used short-term.
